Linn County Conservation has determined that the Matsell Bridge Shooting Range will remain closed through winter. After claims had been made that bullets were leaving the range, the facility was closed immediately to make range improvements and modifications. The 50-yard pistol range is open daily (orientation badge required). However, all other ranges are closed through winter. We expect to have more information about when the range will re-open, information about improvements/modifications, and any rule changes in spring 2013.

what a shame in the 25 years i have been shooting at the range there has never been an incident or complaint, and never has there been an incident of one hunter shooting another hunter or hiker evan during the deer shotgun seasons the range is as safe as the shooters who are at it, and if the range rules are followed then the range is safe for all to use,
maybe it not range design as much as type of weapons used on range?weapons are changing and I see saftey devises to be changing as well
its seems that speed and volume of shot are the focus rather than one
shot accuracy and saftey. It also changes how a shooter looks at shooting.
also ammo is much differant today than in past,it is much more advanced
maybe restrictions should be on type of weapons or type of ammo allowed at range or training required for certain types of weapons and ammo.
Thanks for the comment Dan. I’ll add it to our list of considerations as we work through this process.
How do you get the badge required to use pistol range?
Hello,
In order to get the badge, attendance is needed at an orientation class put on by the Linn County Pistol Club. Unfortunately, they offer those training courses April – October. I can add your name to a list and notify you if they do offer any classes before that, but I’m not sure that they will.

Once again an example of the actions of one or a few impacting the vast majority of responsible people. Chalk another failure up for Linn County. Time to join a private club again
Again, we apologize for any inconvenience, but safety is our number one priority. We will open the shooting range once we are confident the range is safe for everyone.
I don’t see how closing the range is promoting safe shooting options. People will shoot…… somewhere, sometimes where they shouldn’t. How about a published schedule of some limited range hours with a range officer present to try to give us some options. There aren’t enough good range options in this area even when it is open. I am extremely disappointed in your inability to keep the range open.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The range is temporarily closed so we can make modifications and improvements to the range. We don’t have a timeline for when it will reopen, as we are still in the process of designing. However, we hope to know more this spring. While the range is closed, we are exploring options such as a membership, range officer, rules on targets, etc to make the range safer.
Well, I have to say that I have really appreciated having the range at Matsell Bridge during the last year and a half I have been shooting/hunting. We are all lucky to have this available to us free of charge (yes I know taxes pay for it). I hope it can re-open soon. I do not know details of why bullets would be leaving the range (you have to try for that to happen), but maybe everyone should go through some type of orientation before using?
Thanks for the comment Rich. A range orientation is something we are considering for once the range is ready to reopen. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We hope to keep the project moving and open the range as soon as we can in 2013, once we know it is safe for all.
